The Askanier are a German dynasty of ancient nobility, which belonged to the oldest reigning high nobility.
The dynasty of the Askanier had been located in the northeast of the Harz Mountains since the 10 th century BC.
The documented roots of the Askaniers ancestry can be traced until the begin of the 11 th century.
The name of the Askanier traces back to a Medieval Latin version of the castle Aschersleben ( Ascharia) in the contemporary Sachsen-Anhalt .
